Liverpool Celebrates Past, Present And Future With 100 Metre Mural

Coronation Property commissioned a 100 metre long temporary mural that draws inspiration from Liverpool’s broad history, current diverse culture and vibrant community, and its bright future.

Awarded to artist and muralist Alex Lehours to paint, the mural also reflects on the site-specific history – including the original paper mill - on which the masterplanned community The Paper Mill is currently being built.

Painted directly onto site hoarding, the mural features colourful characters and events from the past, interspersed with contemporary portraits reflecting Liverpool’s current diverse cultural mix, as well as metaphors relating to the history of Australia’s first paper mill, which dates back to 1865.

Currently mid-way through his four-week long commission, Alex’s inspiration was drawn from his desire to depict the site’s heritage and its relationship with the contemporary designer apartment community that will transform the site over the coming years.

Coronation Property's reasoning behind the mural is to reflect their intention to deliver the same aesthetically pleasing design elements to all the master planned communities it creates, even in the very earliest stages of their evolution.

“In terms of colour within the piece, I wanted to combine sepia tones that highlight the vintage aspect of the artwork with brighter more vibrant colours. I was really keen to feature the workers who contributed to the site’s past and also chose iconic references that reflected the major events in area’s past that are still readily recognisable now," Mr Lehours said.

The Paper Mill residential project has been master-planned to provide Liverpool with a new approach to urban life on the bank of the Georges River. The precinct will include 1,045 apartments across multiple contemporary buildings and will provide a vibrant, warm and welcoming community for families who reflect Liverpool’s diverse demographics.

It has been designed to become an example of urban renewal where defunct industrial sites are redeveloped into high quality mixed use residential precincts.

Coronation Property Managing Director Joe Nahas said steady interest in another mural commissioned by the company, a four-storey high mural on the site of their future 55-storey apartment tower 8 Phillip Street in Parramatta, helped convince them that this new project was the right move.

"This mural was very effective in promoting the project and drawing potential buyers into the project gallery," he said.

“We see this new mural project as a reflection of our commitment to the revitalisation of Liverpool and its reorientation towards the river.

"In delivering The Paper Mill community we aim to build a vibrant and welcoming community with a lifestyle our residents will love.”

“Once The Paper Mill is fully occupied, there will be approximately 3,000 residents who will have direct access to the river, not to mention all the local Liverpool residents who will be attracted by the vibrant river activity, both on and beside the water.

"This is a transformative project that will unlock the Georges River foreshore and also provide an important destination for local residents and visitors,” Mr Nahas said.
