The development community is in mourning after the death of Tye Alroe, 39, founder of the Gold Coast-based Alroe Constructions.
The builder-developer had a suspected heart attack after a gym session at Burleigh Heads on Tuesday afternoon.
Alroe, who was signed to the Melbourne Storm but did not make his NRL debut, began his property career aged 19 as a brickie’s labourer.
He founded his eponymous company in 2012, which completed its first house, at Bulimba in Brisbane, that year.
In February of this year, Alroe told a Gold Coast magazine that the first role had been invaluable.
“My first job in construction taught me the importance of hard work, resilience, and immersing myself in every aspect of the construction process—I learned quite quickly the significance of having a strong work ethic,” he said.
In 2008, he began his own carpentry business that grew rapidly, including a partnership with Hutchinson Builders and managing a team of more than 60, bringing experience that led to his transition from tradesman to builder.
This led to the formation of Alroe Constructions which has a workbook of $185 million across high-end projects on the Gold Coast.
This includes a three-storey residential project at Main Beach, Lune, comprising six half-floor apartments at 19-21 Rankin Parade, Main Beach.
It is under construction and scheduled to be completed by September.
Another of its projects, The Finn, completed in April and comprises eight half-floor villas at 120-122 Albatross Avenue, Mermaid Beach.
Sector sources said Alroe would be remembered for his passion for the industry and was described as a “rising star”.
He is survived by partner Nikki and their daughter, Poppy, as well as his parents, Vicki and John, and sister Courtney.
