Brisbane’s Historic Dental School Released to Market

Two sites, including a heritage-listed former health facility, on the northern edge of Brisbane’s CBD have joined the state’s release to market of substantial sites in the capital.

A 5200sq m development-ready parcel and the heritage-listed Queensland Dental Hospital and College, both on Turbot Street, are now open to market-driven proposals for residential, hotel or office use, the Queensland Government said.

Developers have been invited to submit expressions of interest through the Economic Development Queensland website by March 5, 2026.

The Queensland Dental Hospital and College building was built between 1938 and 1941 and has been vacant since 2017.

The site would require restoration and adaptive reuse as part of any approved development, the state said.

The parcel of land also included in the release neighbours the heritage site, which was used as a setting for the 2018 ABC TV drama series Harrow that starred Ioan Gruffudd as a crime-solving forensic pathologist.

Two EDQ land releases preceded the Turbot Street sites—the Visy site at South Brisbane and a 1ha site next to the Queensland Tennis Centre at Yeerongpilly.

The government said the latest sites to be released could contribute to housing supply, office capacity and hotel accommodation in the CBD.

The Turbot Street sites are considered impact-assessable under existing planning frameworks, and any development would be subject to standard assessment processes, including public notification.

Expressions of interest will be reviewed by EDQ, with the selection process aimed at identifying a proponent capable of delivering a development that meets planning requirements and heritage obligations.

The sites are near major transport and retail infrastructure, including the Brisbane CBD core, offering potential connectivity advantages for future development.

No timeframe has been set for the selection of a proponent or commencement of construction, and further details on planning and approvals will be determined through the normal assessment channels.
