Seven-Storey Perth Specialist Accommodation Greenlit

Specialist Accommodation HERO.

A seven-storey specialist disability accommodation building with two carer rooms has been approved for West Perth.

The Metro-Inner North Joint Development Assessment Panel approved development plans for the site at 554 Newcastle Street comprising 15 apartments and two carers’ rooms.

Included in the development is a communal rooftop terrace, ground-floor commercial space for the care provider, 14 carparks with 10 allocated for electric-vehicle charging, and a herb garden for residents.

Rechichi Architects principal Anthony Rechichi said the apartments were designed for people with functional impairments and high support needs.

“The development offers a unique approach by placing the care provider at the heart of the development by occupying the ground-floor commercial space,” he said.

“This SDA [specialist disability accommodation] initiative provides more accessible housing options, allowing residents to live more independently while ensuring effective and safe delivery of support.”

According to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, specialist disability accommodation is designed to support people with functional impairments and disabilities.

The accommodation is provided for people with disabilities to live independently in a safe environment while having access to care as needed.

To be eligible for SDA, applicants must have high-support needs or extreme functional impairments and meet the NDIS funding criteria.

Newcastle Street is near a growing arts hub, the Pickle District, so named because of the vinegar brewers and pickle makers who operated in the area more than 100 years ago.

The site is within walking distance of the Leederville city centre and the Northbridge entertainment precinct.
