A delivery partner for the next phase of the long-planned Newcastle-to-Sydney high-speed rail megaproject has been appointed.

The High-Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) has chosen engineering and construction firm Bechtel to partner with it for the development phase of the project that will make it construction ready.

Bechtel Corporation is one of the world's largest private engineering and construction companies.

Headquartered in Virginia in the US, the family-owned firm operates in nearly 50 countries and is known for handling high-stakes infrastructure projects across energy, mining, technology and government contracts.

Bechtel is also the delivery partner for the Western Sydney International Airport and is supporting Perth Airport’s expansion program.

Betchel managing director of public infrastructure, Australia Dr Richard Freer said the high-speed rail project was “one of the country’s most significant and forward-looking infrastructure programs”.

The Newcastle-to-Sydney high-speed rail network is estimated to cost between $70 billion and $93 billion. A delivery by 2039 is proposed.

The HSRA is a Commonwealth Government corporate entity established in 2023 to lead the development and delivery of a national high-speed rail network for Australia, connecting Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and regional communities across the east coast.

The corridor between the two largest cities in NSW, Newcastle to Sydney, is the first stage of the network.

Under the proposal, high-speed trains will travel up to 320kmh on dedicated tracks to create a one-hour commute from Newcastle to Sydney, and a 30-minute journey from the Central Coast to Newcastle or to Sydney.

A rail journey from Newcastle to Sydney currently takes two hours and 40 minutes, about 30 minutes slower than by road.

According to the HSRA’s business case, the high-speed rail network will play a transformational role by connecting Australia’s major East Coast cities.

Projections from HSRA indicate it could create 99,000 jobs and foster a $250 billion boost to the national economy over five decades.

The Commonwealth has made a $500 million commitment toward progress planning, corridor protection and early works.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said this “major investment by the Australian Government” showed “how serious we are by the amount of work going into engaging with industry right from the start”.

“High-speed rail is central to the Australian government’s vision for how we want Australia to develop, not just next year or the next decade, but the decades from now,” King said.
