Private SA Island Comes to Market as Fleurieu Yoga Resort Put on Hold

A freehold island and eco-retreat on South Australia’s Spencer Gulf is up for sale as plans for a yoga resort at Myponga Beach south-east of Adelaide have for now been withdrawn. About 17km north-north-east of tuna fishing hotspot Port Lincoln, 135ha Louth Island is home to the Rumi on Louth retreat. The resort was the brainchild of Che and Natasha Metcalfe who bought the island in 2021. Under their ownership, it has been developed into a retreat comprising six premium suites. Savills ANZ listing agent Nicholas Lower is seeking expressions of interest in the freehold island and resort. Lower said approval was in place to expand the existing six accommodation keys to 49, a day spa, expanded solar infrastructure and ancillary recreational facilities. The property houses the two-hatted Samphire Restaurant, which operates as a standalone eatery. Showcasing the Eyre Peninsula’s produce and culinary identity, the restaurant serves the island’s lodgers and shorter-term visitors. Meanwhile, at Myponga Beach, 65km from Adelaide, a group called The Circular Initiative had filed plans with the Fleurieu regional assessment panel for a yoga and health resort. But the group—which aims to rewild an undulating 113.5ha former sheep, cattle and tree farm at 279 Sampson Road—this week pulled a resort proposal for the plot ahead of the panel’s meeting on September 22. A spokesperson for The Circular Group said the application was withdrawn to allow time to “meet and collaborate with” neighbours. ▲ Plans for The Circular Initiative’s yoga and health resort at Myponga Beach have been paused pending consultation with neighbours. “The proposal will be resubmitted once the community consultation has occurred,” the spokesperson told The Urban Developer . “On this 264 acres [206ha] of Kaurna country we are restoring native woody grasslands and seeding a community-owned retreat centre. “We’re planning a space for people to reimagine a positive local future together, and reconnect to themselves, each other, and nature.” Although the planned resort—designed by Adelaide architect Felicity Gartelmann—attracted 13 and 9 objections respectively in two rounds of consultation, it had been recommended for approval. ▲ Up to 12 functions a year, including weddings, have been envisaged for the planned yoga resort. The resort would have six single-storey buildings that together would include 15 guest rooms, a treatment room, a staff room, a hall and communal lounge, dining, kitchen, laundry and toilets. On a 1ha area, the group intends to grow and harvest native grasses to seed and extensively revegetate the site.
