Plans for a new boutique hotel at Kangaroo Point have hopped up in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic Games despite doubts surrounding the main stage Gabba Stadium redevelopment.
Plus Architecture unveiled designs for Rotherham Hotel, “a contemporary urban oasis”, across 16 levels to be built between the Dockside Marina and Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane.
MH Hotel Management, led by Grace Gao, picked up the ageing Il Mondo Hotel in April, 2022 on a 1581sq m site at 35 Rotherham Street, Kangaroo Point.
A development application is expected to be filed for the site in the coming weeks with plans for a 179-key hotel, creating a 15,500sq m offering.
The early plans show wellness experiences, a rooftop infinity pool, entertainment spaces, conference facilities and dining were all on the cards.
Rotherham Hotel’s facade features large porthole windows as a nod to the fondations of the Story Bridge, which opened in 1940, and green brickwork and geometric shapes.
The design would be further reflected through landscaping on every level, with ground-floor greenscaping connected to the rooftop via a cutaway tower element spanning all 16 storeys.
Plus Architecture principal Chrisney Formosa said the hotel would be aimed at the continued growth of an emerging traveller demographic.
“The Rotherham Hotel will be a landmark international destination in Kangaroo Point, offering a harmonious blend of luxury, urbanity and nature,” Formosa said.
Geometric patterns would also be incorporated in the $350-million Princess Alexandra Hospital extension according to images released by the Queensland Government.
The plans show 219 acute inpatient and 30 ICU beds along with 13 cancer treatment bay and reconfigured specialist beds.
Construction was scheduled to begin in the second half 2024 and be completed in the second half of 2026.
Meanwhile, nearby, a unit complex at 500 Main Street, Kangaroo Point, has hit the market.
The property listed by C Property has 629sq m of freehold space, 21m of frontage and has a five-unit building onsite.
As development in the area continues to grow, former Brisbane City councillor and lord mayor Graham Quirk is spearheading a review into Olympic venues.
The $2.7-billion Gabba redevelopment along with the Brisbane Arena and other smaller developments are in question. The 60-day review to be completed in March.
