Fears are growing that construction sites across Sydney could slow down significantly after a number of tradies tested positive for Covid-19.
The Decode Group Construction Excavation site in Homebush on July 9 and Toongabbie Construction site from June 28 to July 2 have been listed as transmission venues of concern.
The state government was unable to detail the exact number of construction workers due to confidentiality concerns but said a number of other sites had been affected.
Seven Bunnings Warehouses in Sydney were also on the list—Padstow, Hoxton Park, Redwick, Bonnyrigg, Ashfield, Kirrawee and Villawood.
NSW recorded 112 locally acquired cases of Covid-19 on July 12,bringing the total number of locally acquired cases to 678 since mid-July.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said family and friends were the majority of cases, but 34 were community transmissions.
“We need to accept many of the workers we rely on come from south west Sydney, aged care workers, tradies doing emergency work, cleaners...” Berejiklian said
“Do not go to work unless you absolutely know that you don’t have the virus.
“If you’re a key worker or you work in multiple sites and you’re from the Fairfield local government area, I would prefer you stayed at home unless you absolutely have to leave the house and unless you can assure that you’ve had a negative Covid test.”
Last year during Melbourne’s major Covid wave there were also multiple cases confirmed on construction sites.
The recovery plan in Victoria included reducing the number of workers on site at any one time as well as a ban on display homes and restrictions placed on selling homes.
