An Edwardian-era corner building at Prahran will be preserved and integrated into an eight-level development under plans approved by the City of Stonnington.
The Leeka Development project comprises 32 wellness-focused apartments opposite the iconic Prahran Market.
The design by Cera Stribley blends the two-storey Edwardian retail building with contemporary architecture on the 1132sq m site at 188 Commercial Road, at the corner of Izett Street, about 5km south of the Melbourne CBD.
The heritage facade will be preserved, and the upper levels of the new build stepped back behind the historic streetscape, allowing its Edwardian character to remain prominent.
The project, dubbed Comme Prahran, comprises one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments atop retail, dining and public amenity spaces at ground level.
The development will include wellness-centred design elements such as natural ventilation, green spaces and communal areas.
Beulah acquired the site in 2021 for $11.4 million and had planned a sustainable mixed-use development. Leeka is now delivering the project while Beulah International is listed as a development partner.
Cera Stribley managing principal Domenic Cerantonio said the project’s focus was on “creating a vibrant, integrated community hub that celebrates Prahran’s past while embracing its future”.
The practice was selected based on its experience within the Stonnington area and “understanding of Prahran’s urban fabric”.
“As a firm with deep roots in Prahran, this project was particularly meaningful to us,” Cerantonio said.
Leeka director Chek Ming Cheng said Prahran’s appeal stemmed from its cosmopolitan character.
“Prahran has long been a cosmopolitan hub, known for its vibrant dining, retail and social life alongside a strong community spirit,” he said.
“Comme Prahran will create a contemporary place with a timeless character, blending heritage and modern design to foster creativity and inclusivity.”
Leeka recently launched Avoca in South Yarra, comprising five whole-floor homes and a single standalone house, in partnership with Prime Edition.
