NT, Feds Pave Way for 222-Lot Farrar West Scheme

A 222-lot development on the outskirts of Darwin is moving ahead after the NT and Federal governments came to the party.
NT Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Joshua Burgoyne has granted the Larrakia Development Corporation a nine-year lease to enable development of Farrar West, 21km south-east of the Darwin CBD.
Meanwhile, the Commonwealth has tipped in $11 million to upgrade power, water and sewer infrastructure networks in the area.
Next to the existing suburb of Farrar (pictured at top), the planned 42.4ha project comprises 222 residential lots, five commercial lots, six group housing lots and one community purpose lot, to be delivered over eight years.
“Reaching this agreement marks a significant milestone towards boosting housing supply and infrastructure in the Territory,” Burgoyne said.
“We know the Territory’s population is growing and our housing supply must grow with it.”
The lease is a key element of a compensation package that arose from the Kenbi land claim finalised in late 2024. It was lodged 47 years earlier.
Larrakia Development Corporation chair Mark Motlop said the five-stage Farrar West project, which will include larger than average residential lots, had been designed to support Larrakia families into affordable rental or owner-occupied homes.
The corporation, which The Urban Developer contacted for an interview, will undertake the development and said it would aim to create opportunities for Aboriginal employment and businesses.
