Journal Completes PBSA Skyscraper Neighbouring Queen Vic Market

Journal Student Living’s 715-unit tower beside Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market is now complete.
The 40-storey, 715-unit Journal Market Way building at 100 Franklin Street was designed by COX Architecture and built by Multiplex.
COX associate director Johannes Lupolo-Chan said the PBSA tower had been designed around the experience of arriving in a new city, and the role a home can play in building a community from that point.
Lupolo-Chan said that for many residents, the tower would be their first home in Melbourne, and for others, their first in Australia.
“We considered the whole journey through the building and the moments where people naturally cross paths,” he said.
“Those everyday encounters became an important part of how we organised the building.”
A network of shared spaces runs vertically through the tower, positioned along the everyday routes residents will take between their room and the street.
Lupolo-Chan said that created places on parts of the building’s 32,000sq m of floor space to study, cook, exercise, gather and pause.

The buiding has a library, communal kitchens, dining areas, a podcast studio, games lounge, cinema, gym, sky lounge, rooftop garden and small pockets for informal interaction.
The four-storey Burbank House has been retained on the 1695sq m site and connected to the new tower through a central atrium and circulation network.
Journal Market Way continued the collaboration between COX and Journal Student Living, joining sister projects in Brisbane and Adelaide.
“The continuity of the relationship allows us to learn from each project and carry that knowledge into the next,” Lupolo-Chan said.
Students are due to move in from Semester 1, 2027.
