Plans for an 11-court international indoor sports centre for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games basketball events have been unveiled on the Sunshine Coast.
The sporting infrastructure would be funded under the Queensland and federal government Games funding agreement with a view to being completed in 2027, well ahead of the Olympic Games.
The announcement is the latest in a raft of development and infrastructure projects coming in the lead up to the Games.
The plans also include an expansion to the outdoor Sunshine Coast Stadium, aquatic centre and Sunshine Coast Sports Hub, but the cost of the project is yet to be revealed.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new infrastructure would provide sporting opportunities for future generations.
“Importantly, it will provide an opportunity to design and construct a facility that will be leading edge in respect to accessibility and service to the many para-sports and athletes we have in the region,’’ Jamieson said.
“Confirmation of the new indoor stadium at Kawana now provides the opportunity to develop our very own world-class sporting precinct here on the Sunshine Coast.
“In other exciting news, the long-awaited Sunshine Coast Stadium expansion should now start in 2024.’’
Planning and design works will start immediately with a view of commencing construction of the new indoor sports centre in 2025.
Queensland deputy premier Steven Miles said the Kawana indoor sport facility was one of six the state government was investing in ahead of the Games.
The decision to develop the Indoor Sports Centre at Kawana followed a review of the site and another in the Maroochydore City Centre.
