An application has been lodged with the South Australian planning authority to redevelop the Adelaide Aquatic Centre at Denise Norton Park.
The redevelopment is planned for the centre over multi-levels, costing $135 million for design and construction.
Plans include indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, splash zones and gardens plus a gym, fitness facilities, a spa, sauna and steam room.
State transport and infrastructure minister Tom Koutsantonis said the community wanted an updated aquatic centre accessible for all ages and with upgraded amenities.
“We expect interest will be strong among major construction firms to build this landmark new centre, and we look forward to contracting a builder later this year,” Koutsantonis said.
The building would be all electric using 100 per cent renewable energy with available carparks increasing from 266 to 375 spaces.
A 50m, 10-lane heated pool would occupy the indoor area with diving boards and learn-to-swim programs, and a 25m pool with a lagoon would occupy the outside area.
The current aquatic centre would close in August, 2024 with completion of the work expected late 2025, early 2026.
A cafe, barbecue areas, updated cycle pathways and public transport accessibility were included in the design process.
Adelaide Aquatic Centre would be fully funded by the South Australian government with Adelaide-based JPE Design Studio, Warren and Mahoney and Yellaka (Karl Winda Telfer) appointed to design the project.
The SA government is in the process of sourcing a builder to deliver the project.
