State Adds 270 Geelong Units to Fast-Track Approvals

Almost 300 apartments have been fast-tracked for Geelong as the Victorian Government works to accelerate residential project delivery.

The approval of 270 apartments across two Geelong sites has been made under the Development Facilitation Program, which requires projects to deliver at least 10 per cent affordable housing.

Melbourne-based Up Property has been greenlit for a mixed-use development at Malop Street comprising 214 apartments from studio to three-bedroom configurations.

The project will also include retail spaces, co-working facilities and a hotel component.

The 16-storey development opposite Westfield Shopping Centre is within walking distance of Moorabool Street Bus Interchange, Geelong Station, University Hospital Geelong and the Geelong Waterfront.

Public walkways will connect to Little Malop Street as part of the ground-level design.

Almost 300 carparks are planned for the first four floors, with access from Kirk Place.

Up Property has also won approval for 56 apartments in a mix of studio to three-bedroom homes across two four-storey buildings at Hope and Autumn streets, Geelong West.

The Austin-Maynard Architects-designed project attracted objections from residents concerned about height and traffic impacts before ministerial approval.

The site is near the Geelong Station as well as bus stops, shops and parks.

The Development Facilitation Program has approved more than 5000 homes since opening to residential projects two years ago.

Up Property has previously redeveloped 181 Moorabool Street for Barwon Health’s Mental Health Hub.

And on the 6.2ha former CSIRO site at nearby Belmont, which it acquired in 2015 for $8 million to $10 million, Up Property’s $126.5-million Lume masterplanned community could deliver more than 220 homes.

The latest approvals come as Geelong’s central business district faces revitalisation pressure.

The Committee for Geelong unveiled a $1-billion vision in March to transform Market Square into a mixed-use precinct featuring more than 300 apartments, 5000sq m of public green space and retail offerings.
