Early designs have been released for major rail upgrades across Melbourne’s west, including a rebuilt Spotswood Station and two new modern stations at Tottenham and Albion.

The works are part of the Victorian Government’s program of rail transformation, capacity upgrades and level crossing removals.

At Spotswood, the Hudsons Road level crossing will be removed as the Werribee Line is elevated over the road, a congested and high-risk intersection used by more than 6600 vehicles each day, with boom gates sometimes down for up to 50 minutes during peak periods.

The new station will include entrances from Hudsons Road and McLister Street, while the heritage-listed station building on Hope Street will be retained and integrated into the final design.

Community consultation helped shape the early plans, with residents pushing for safer pedestrian and cycling connections, improved accessibility and additional open space, which will be delivered beneath the raised rail line through landscaping and public realm upgrades.

The Hudsons Road removal is part of a package of five level crossing removals across Newport, Spotswood, Yarraville and Altona. The Werribee Line expected to be level crossing free by 2029.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said the works would improve safety and ease congestion.

“Removing the dangerous Hudsons Road level crossing and building a new Spotswood Station will make journeys safer and less congested for local families,” she said.

Meanwhile, early designs have also been released for two new stations, at Tottenham and Albion, as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1, a major upgrade of the western rail corridor.

More than 6km of track between West Footscray and Albion are being upgraded to increase capacity, while major works will untangle one of Victoria’s busiest rail junctions and transform Sunshine into a transport superhub capable of handling up to 1000 trains per day.

The $4.1-billion project is jointly funded by the State and Federal governments and will support a direct rail connection to Melbourne Airport as well as enabling future electrification of the Melton Line.

Albion Station will also be rebuilt slightly east of its existing site and feature an accessible concourse, improved lighting, CCTV, seating and upgraded platform facilities.

Tottenham Station will be rebuilt approximately 20m north of its location on the realigned Sunbury Line, with access provided via a widened underpass that connects both sides of the rail corridor, along with new lifts, stairs, lighting and sheltered platforms.

Albion Station will also be rebuilt slightly east of its existing site and feature an accessible concourse, improved lighting, CCTV, seating and upgraded platform facilities.

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull said the project would increase capacity across the network and support growing outer-west communities by enabling more frequent train services.
