Urbanity 2024: Fresh New Panel Added to Line-Up

A new interactive, innovative session has been revealed for this year’s Urbanity conference: The Great Housing Debate.

This session will be a provocative and lively panel debate that is sure to generate plenty of back and forth between participants as they share their solutions to the housing affordability crisis in Australia.

Join Kate Meyrick on the front line as the mediator of the debate with Illan Samuel, Cameron Murray and Mike Meyers each presenting their solutions that are sure to spark lively discussion.

This interactive session will dive into the housing crisis in an informative and progressive manner and bring forward solutions you won't find anywhere else.

What will Illan bring to the debate? 

Samuel has an extensive background in the high-end multi-residential sector as the managing director of Melbourne-based Samuel Property. His company is privately owned so he will bring his perspective and solutions from that point of view. He hopes to leave a lasting impression on the Melbourne property landscape producing high-quality buildings that can be “enjoyed for a lifetime.”

Meyers worked extensively in the UK social housing sector before he migrated to Australia and has driven policy reform, attracting more than $1.5 billion in private investment and $500 million in government investment. He brings a wealth of knowledge about the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) and Buy Assist Australia to the debate,

Fresh Economic Thinking

Dr Murray brings a fresh perspective to the panel as a renowned expert commentator on Australia’s housing. He is an economist and co-author of Rigged, and runs his own think-tank, Fresh Economic Thinking. He brings knowledge to the table from being a tenant, homeowner and a landlord, and has worked extensively in the property development industry.

Meyrick will be your moderator for the panel and she will throw questions to the panelists, dig deeper and unpack each perspective. As a director at Urbis, Meyrick is known as a prominent place-maker and urbanist with more than 25 years of experience spanning Australia, Asia, Europe and the US. 



How it will work


This lively panel event will begin with Meyrick adding context around the topic before introducing the speakers, who will then detail their solutions.

Each speaker will have a set time to present their perspective, the reasons for it, their solutions and findings. This will be followed by a panel discussion, lead by Meyrick, as the paenls collectively discusses those solutions to Australia’s housing crisis. And there will be opportunities for audience members to share in the action, questioning the panellists. Don’t miss it.
