National grocery giant Woolworths has proposed a five-storey apartment building, 52 townhouses and a supermarket for a vacant block at Moncrieff in the northern Canberra district of Gungahlin.

At the heart of the plans, lodged by Woolworths’s development arm Fabcot, is a two-storey retail centre with 5711sq m of floor space.

This comprises a 2500sq m Woolworths supermarket, 1327sq m of speciality retail space, 1231sq m for health services, 153sq m for commerical use and 500sq m for an indoor recreation facility.

The building would include a 238-space basement car park equipped with electric vehicle chargers. Alongside the commercial centre, a five-storey apartment block with 42 units, including 16 affordable homes, is proposed.

The apartment building would have 12 one-bedroom units, 26 two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units. An undercroft would contain 66 car spaces, two motorbike spaces and 46 bicycle spots.

Rising across the 24,000sq m development site—which is bounded by Horse Park Drive, Mirrabei Drive and O’Keefe Avenue—would be a further 46 three-bedroom and five two-bedroom townhouses and one four-bedroom townhouse.

The project includes a central park that would stretch from Horse Park Drive to O’Keefe Avenue. A further 60 bicycle spaces would be provided alongside adjacent streets and 23 on-street car spaces provided.

Fabcot says the grassed development site has little biodiversity and native landscaping and the planned park would improve ecological connectivity.

The developer says the project would address a gap in services for Moncrieff residents, many of whom travel outside the suburb to shop.

Designed by Clarke Hopkins Clarke architects, the project is open for public comment until July 8.
