Storage Shed Design Wins Praise in Sydney’s Bayside

Mijollo International Architects designed the self storage facility for Chapter and Co

Storage in south-west Sydney is continuing to boom with two applications filed with the Bayside Council this month.

They are a 10-storey facility put forward for Mascot and an eye-catching facility proposed for the former Darrell Lea Chocolate factory at Kogarah.

For the former, Chapter and Co want to reduce office space and add three levels to its approved seven-storey development at 21 Ossary Street, Mascot.

The Design Review Panel commended the efforts and materiality proposed by Mijollo International Architects which it said “gave the building a strong urban presence”.

Wilson Storage would operate the facility, which would have a gross floor area of 11,288sq m, on the 1594sq m site.

“Since the time of the approval, it has become apparent that there is significant and strongly growing demand for self-storage capacity within this area,” the report by Sutherland and Associates planning said.

“This is also evident from the other self-storage proposals being pursued in the area.”

Meanwhile, Abacus Group has lodged plans with Bayside Council to create a six-storey facility on the former Darrell Lea Chocolate factory site.

The building, to be tenanted by Storage King, was designed by BN Group architects for a 3108sq m site at 204 Rocky Point Road, Kogarah.

The project would be near recent residential developments but would have a “positive relationship” with the area, according to the planning report.

“The proposal responds to the existing and desired future character of the area and will revitalise the site,” the report by Ethos Urban said.

The site was the home of Australian confectioner Darrel Lea from 1962 to 2014. After 85 years under ownership by the Lea family, the company went under in 2012 and was bought by the millionaire Quinn family, which is behind the VIP Pet Food empire.

They moved the Darrel Lea manufacturing business to Ingleburn in south-west Sydney.

In January, 2018, Quadrant Private Equity bought Darrell Lea from the Quinn family for about $200 million. Tony and Christina Quinn retained a significant stake in the company.
