Productivity Commission Maps Escape from Housing Affordability Dead-Ends

Developers, planners and builders largely agree with this week’s seemingly self-evident Productivity Commission finding that regulations need a shakeup to improve housing affordability, but one analyst expects resistance from an obstinate bureaucrat or two.

The commission’s interim report into housing supply regulation outlines four principles for better regulation: adopting a “build mindset”, regulating only where necessary, coordinating housing with infrastructure and keeping the process simple.

Commission chair Danielle Wood said poor housing affordability was putting homes out of reach for too many people.
