A Federal plan to compel developers of large-scale data centres to generate as much power as they use has been formally opposed by Queensland and the Northern Territory

An online meeting of the energy and climate change ministerial council last month was told that by 2050 data centres would use 10 per cent of power from the national energy market.

At the meeting, Queensland energy minister David Janetzki and his NT counterpart Gerard Maley were the only two representatives to oppose a planned Commonwealth law that would compel new, large-scale data centres to underwrite renewable power supply.
