Plans for a major social and affordable housing project are in progress for Townsville.
Community Housing Limited, the country’s largest community housing provider, has plans in the works for the north Queensland city, which is expected to hit a population milestone of 306,053 by 2046, adding more than 70,000 people to its current total.
Community Housing Limited has submitted an application to have its project at 43 Gregory Street in the suburb of Condon nominated for Ministerial Infrastructure Designation.
It would build 258 units, including 156 affordable homes and 102 social housing apartments.
There would be a mix of 10 one-bedroom, 142 two-bedroom and 8 three-bedroom units.
CHL is planning to build eight three-storey buildings on the 28,988sq m site.
The northern and southern central buildings would house the three-bedroom units, with the rest of the one and two-bedroom apartments in the remaining buildings, surrounding a courtyard area.
The site is in “an emerging residential area” in the Condon and Thuringowa Central locale.
The not-for-profit community housing provider delivers housing for vulnerable and low-income people.
CHL said it sought to deliver “modern, accessible, and secure homes for those experiencing housing difficulty”.
According to the Townsville Local Housing Action Plan, more than 4000 Townsville residents are in need of affordable housing, with 2545 experiencing rental stress and 1570 experiencing homelessness or are marginally housed.
A CHL spokesperson told The Urban Developer that there was an “urgent and real need” for social and affordable housing across the country.
“We know that solving Australia’s housing crisis, including creating more social and affordable homes, will need everyone across the industry to work together,” they said.
“At CHL, we will continue to work alongside government, community and commercial partners to create more homes for Australians.”
