AMP Capital’s Marrickville Metro development expanded retail offerings over a 11,000sq m site for the community and enabled the use of the building as a free public art gallery, curating and displaying the work of local artists.
AMP Capital engaged the community in the design and development of the site, which also sought to sensitively restore and preserve the heritage elements of the Shelley Drinks Warehouse as well as ensuring residents’ safety with walkways and a pedestrian-only section of the main street.
The Hames Sharley Architects-designed development now creates a new use for the site, adds new value to the sites around it, and new pathways and connections to existing communal hubs.
The new development includes a pedestrian link bridge between the old and new buildings, a new restaurant precinct, Smidmore street dining, and more than 40 new retailers.
The project included the transformation of a previously busy road section into a pedestrian-friendly zone connecting the two buildings, providing a favourable outlook for the restaurant precinct.
The team worked in collaboration with the Inner West Council in a co-curatorial art and creative program designed to showcase local artists.
