The third annual The Urban Developer Awards, in association with Construction Industry Solutions (COINS), recognises standout property industry performers from across Australasia.
The awards program is a little different this year: delivered digitally, with the previously held black-tie gala dinner replaced with our extended virtual celebration, Winners’ Month.
Today, we celebrate Development of the Year — Retail proudly presented by Future Food.
This award recognises excellence in the development of retail projects.

Burwood Brickworks shopping centre is currently the only privately-developed building in the world open to the entire community which demonstrates a regenerative benefit to the site it occupies.
It’s self-sufficient, doesn’t exceed the resources of its location and contains socially equitable, culturally rich and ecologically restorative spaces that connect people to light, air, food and community.
Modelling shows the capital investment in sustainable initiatives will be returned over the lifecycle of the project due to its enhanced asset value, energy and water cost savings, and enhanced performance due to increased customer dwell times and expenditure, compared to a standard retail centre in the same location.
Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre has been designed by NH Architecture, in partnership with Russell & George on the interior design, Wurundjeri-willam artist Mandy Nicholson for the ceiling mural and façade artwork and creative input from environmental pioneer Joost Bakker.
The centre extends over two stories covering approximately 13,000 square metres of GLA and features a 2,500 square metre rooftop urban farm run by Acre farm & eatery.
It is anchored by Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s, Reading Cinemas and approximately 35 specialty tenancies.

“There's things that are very tangible, you put renewable energy into a project, there's a payback because of the arbitrage between what you would pay from the grid and what you would generate on site,” Frasers Property living building challenge manager Stephen Choi said.
“Then there are some really intangible things like we've got a sawtooth roof in the main mall where the windows open and close like a flower depending on the external conditions and brings fresh air, daylight and a beautiful sky.
“It is very hard to measure what the impact of that is, but I can tell you a lot of people go there, [and] going to a shopping centre and knowing you are going to have fresh air is quite an usual thing.”
