About this project

Monterey Kangaroo Point is an innovative flagship project, demonstrating the ability to integrate mass timber construction methodology into the multi-storey apartment realm.

Using CLT allowed for a lightweight construction that met the weight requirements of the Clem 7 tunnel, allowing them to build 12-storeys rather than five, and also reduced emissions in material production—the equivalent of taking 700 cars off the road.

Project details

  • Gardner Vaughn Group collaborated with the University of Technology Sydney to externally waterproof the structure to avoid dew forming within the cross-laminated timber envelope and reducing the affects of temperature on the expansion and contraction of the timber structure.

  • Monterey has replaced 1170 cubic metres of traditional concrete and blockwork for Australian Timber. The use of CLT in the build of Monterey is equivalent to removing over 700 petrol cars off the road for 1 year and also equivalent to the energy required to power a home for over 300 years.

  • The form of the building is derived from a response to the subtropical climate with the consideration to the orientation of the sun, prevailing summer breezes and winter winds.
