Dimmey's clock tower development in Richmond

Melbourne has reinforced its reputation as the restoration capital with the redevelopment of an iconic heritage-listed clock tower in Richmond.

Richmond Icon Apartments will see the historic Dimmey's clock tower and Swan Street facade reborn as a mixed use development of apartments, heritage lofts and convenience retail.

Located at 140 - 160 Swan Street, Richmond, the

Arnsby Architects-designed development will feature a 10 level oval-shaped residential spire on the south western corner of the site comprising 82 one and two bedroom apartments. 15 select heritage lofts will be incorporated into the historic building fabric, as well as a ground floor Coles supermarket, retail specialties and potentially artist studios and office space.

Dimmey's has been a Richmond landmark since 1878 with its famous clock tower constructed in 1910. It is an example of the American Romanesque style developed in the mid 19th century and made famous by simplified round arches and semi-circular arches on the windows. The original Dimmey's building began life as a textile fabric store, evolving into a quality goods store during the Depression and then most recently becoming a prominent bargain store.

The apartments will feature New York-style private winter gardens, double-glazed windows, stainless steel Miele appliances and contemporary Caesarstone bench tops.

One bedrooms start from $490,000, two bedroom apartments and townhouses from $640,000 and three bedroom townhouses from $799,000.

The heritage loft apartments are being sold as unfitted shells or custom fitted to the buyer’s specifications with pricing on application.

The project is being developed by a private group known as Richmond Icon Pty Ltd and marketed by boutique project marketing firm

Next Level Property.

The 4,000sqm site was purchased by the developers off the Dimmey's business for $16 million in 2009.
