The Sydney proptech behind Australia’s weekly deposit instalment model has opened limited first-wave access for a product designed to help renters direct weekly payments toward a home deposit.

Unrent by Coposit is aimed at renters who can manage weekly housing costs but are delayed by the deposit hurdle.

Australia’s rental market has reached a critical inflection point, with rents rising faster than savings capacity across every major capital city and more than eight million Australians currently renting.

For many, the barrier to ownership is not the ability to make weekly housing payments. It is the inability to accumulate a deposit while doing so.

For developers and project marketers, the product is positioned to convert part of the existing rental pool into eligible buyers for completed stock, which is a demand-side lever distinct from the off-the-plan segment Coposit already serves.

Coposit chief executive and co-founder Chris Ferris said “renters are not failing because they cannot handle a weekly housing payment—they are already doing this by paying rent”.

“Many are failing because the deposit keeps moving further out of reach while they keep paying rent. Unrent by Coposit is designed to change where that money goes,” he said.

Unlike traditional rent-to-own models, Unrent by Coposit charges no fees on top of market rent. Weekly rent payments accumulate toward the tenant’s deposit at no additional cost, while they continue to occupy the home.

How Unrent by Coposit works

Renters join the waitlist and receive priority access when the first wave opens. Weekly rent payments then accumulate toward a property deposit rather than exclusively toward a landlord’s equity.

No fees are charged to the tenant on top of market rent. The product is designed for renters who qualify for home ownership but find it difficult to save a deposit while paying rent.

“Home ownership is not lost for Australian renters. Too many have simply been told it is impossible,” Ferris said. “Unrent by Coposit is our answer to that.”

Unrent extends Coposit’s broader focus on housing access. Coposit’s existing platform enables qualified buyers to secure eligible off-the-plan properties with an initial deposit of $10,000 and pay the remaining balance through weekly interest-free instalments during construction.

Unrent applies that same logic to renters who can now purchase completed stock.

The Unrent by Coposit waitlist is now open and early members will receive priority access ahead of a full launch in October 2026.
