Perth-based Cedar Woods has landed the contract to develop more than 90 social housing apartments in Melbourne’s south-east.
Planned is a five-storey complex of 97 apartments and six ground-floor retail tenancies on a 2211sq m site at Douglas Street, next to Noble Park train station, 25km south-east of the CBD.
HousingFirst, a not-for-profit organisation providing community housing to more than 2500 residents across Melbourne, has secured funding from the Victorian and Commonwealth governments to acquire the completed building and manage ongoing tenancies.
Commonwealth funding is through the first round of the Housing Australia Future Fund Facility and the National Housing Accord Facility. State support is from the Social Housing Growth Fund as part of the Big Housing Build initiative.
Cedar Woods has appointed Balmain & Co as the principal contractor. Construction is to begin soon. Settlement and the first residents moving in is expected for later next year.
Cedar Woods managing director Nathan Blackburne said the project “would provide quality, sustainable and modern living in well-designed housing that would support the lifestyle and livelihoods of future residents”.
Monash University and the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster, which supports about 75,000 jobs, are both nearby.
The Victorian Government has identified Noble Park as a priority revitalisation area, establishing the Noble Park Revitalisation Board in 2021 and investing about $2 million in initiatives in the area.
Cedar Woods has 37 projects across four states and more than 9700 lots in its development pipeline.
