Early works are poised to begin on an $230-million “super club” in Sydney’s inner-west.

Under the plans for Burwood RSL Club, a 14-storey, 200-key hotel with a rooftop bar will top the club’s stepped four-level entertainment podium.

That podium would step up to three levels east towards Shaftesbury Road to accommodate the site’s incline.

It will include restaurants, lounges, children’s play spaces and an 800-capacity theatre and conference centre, and be delivered as Stage 1 of the development.

Stage 2 is to comprise the 4.5-star hotel tower, lap pool, restaurant and outdoor terraces.

Branded restaurants, themed bars, a gym, creche and microbrewery are also part of the plans, and six basement levels will accommodate 1250 car parks.

The new facilites will have an events capacity of 1000 people and up to 500 people in its show room.

The existing facilities at 96 Shaftesbury Road—home to the Burwood RSL Club since 1950—would be closed and sold after the club moves to the new site on the corner of Shaftesbury Road and George Street.

“Our design reimagines the Club as a day-night entertainment destination, catering to a broad demographic,” he said.
▲ Buchan director Anthony Palamara called the club a day-night entertainment destination and said it would cater to a wide demographic.

The relocated 11,270sq m site is next to the train line and less than 500m from the Burwood Station. It is about 12km by road for the Sydney CBD.

Architecture firm Buchan, which joined the project in 2015, has designed a part-Federation brickwork, part-contemporary bronze detail building.

Buchan director Anthony Palamara said the project was not a “larger version of the traditional RSL” but rather a “vertical mixed-use precinct” at Burwood’s town centre.

“Our design reimagines the club as a day-night entertainment destination, catering to a broad demographic,” he said.

Homes, a scout hall, college and travel agency are to be demolished to make way for the project, which was approved in 2022 as a State Significant Development.

Burwood RSL had been buying up lots at the corner block since 2006 in its bid to amalgamate the site.
