Contractor Revealed for $175m Wallan Interchange Upgrade

A much-anticipated interchange upgrade north of the Victorian capital is poised to begin after the contractor for the $175-million project was announced.
The upgrade for the interchange at Wallan, a growing township about 45km north of the Melbourne CBD that is a key gateway between the metropolitan fringe and regional Victoria, will be delivered by Winslow.
The project is expected to improve safety and ease congestion for motorists in Melbourne’s north, providing additional connections between Wallan, the Hume Freeway and the city.
Early works will begin this year, and crews are already onsite conducting investigations and establishing the compound ahead of major construction in early 2026.
The upgrade will add new freeway ramps and improved connections to improve entry to and exit from the Hume Freeway.
Traffic lights will also be installed on both sides of the interchange to improve safety and traffic flow.
Around 1100 jobs are expected to be supported through the project, according to the State Government.

The interchange is expected to handle up to 30,000 daily journeys and reduce congestion on surrounding roads.
The project was part of a broader investment in Melbourne’s northern transport network, the Government said, that included the upcoming Camerons Lane Interchange Upgrade at Beveridge and recently completed works such as the Craigieburn Road and Mickleham Road upgrades.
The project is being jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments—$90 million has been contributed by the Commonwealth and $85 million by the state.
Completion is scheduled for late 2027.
