TUD Awards 2020: Behind the Scenes

ff52f259-c797-4225-ac63-f6d05f19a2fc

On the eve of The Urban Developer Awards Winners’ Month—our virtual celebration of category winners—the time has come to reveal our remarkable 2020 trophy.

Designed in collaboration with Brickworks and UAP, this unique artefact is a testament to teamwork and a holistic design approach.

The concept

A translucent glass brick is offset with a timber veil to add intrigue and the sense of a “reveal”, juxtaposing materials to create an elegant object with natural finishes—an embodiment of the awards’ holistic approach to industry excellence.

“The fusion of wood and glass has been a vital design element in construction and urban development,” Daniel Clifford, principal of art and design at UAP said.

“Wood and glass are omnipresent in the buildings where we work, play and live.

“These natural materials express the beautiful aesthetics of sophistication, elegance and recognition.”

The process

UAP applied its expertise in advance manufacturing to produce the delicate timber veil, with each one individually milled, sanded and polished to create our 20 identical winners’ awards.

The result

“The enduring appeal of the timber element with its hue, beautiful grain and durability favoured well to the glass brick, with the outcome feeling modern and contemporary to even traditional,” Clifford said.
