State plans to increase housing in 10 Melbourne centres by up to 60,000 homes have gone public.
The centres were first listed in the Housing Statement delivered by former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews before he resigned.
The suburbs are Broadmeadows, Chadstone, Camberwell Junction, Epping, Frankston, Niddrie-Keilor Road, Moorabbin, Preston-High Street, Ringwood and North Essendon.
All 10 were determined to have capacity for increased housing density while maintaining access to amenities and services such as town centres, jobs and transport networks.
The Victorian Government plans to build 60,000 new homes across the centres in consultation with councils and communities.
Parks, community facilities and public spaces are included in the plans.
Victoria needs 800,000 new homes during the next decade to tackle the housing supply and renting crisis.
Building heights and design requirements will be reviewed as part of the planning push.
“We want to hear from communities on how best we can accommodate more housing choice, while ensuring their suburbs maintain their liveability,” Victorian planning minister Sonya Kilkenny said.
The Victorian Planning Authority is working towards a goal of 30 per cent new greenfields development and 70 per cent infill development in established areas, particularly the middle-ring suburbs where it is thought that housing density can and should be increased.
