Demolition has been completed on the site of Newcastle Airport’s new international terminal in the NSW Hunter region.
Construction on the new terminal is ramping up with a new concrete slab already poured and other early works completed.
Underground baggage handling tunnels and an electrical substation are under construction.
The substation will enable solar panels to be installed later in 2024 and the terminal will include border facilities.
Cox Architects designed the new terminal, which received $55 million in funding from the federal government in April 2022.
The Hunter region is the sixth largest economy in Australia with 850,000 additional visitors and $12.7 billion expected to flow into the region over the next 20 years once the terminal and airfield are upgraded and expanded.
“This upgrade will unlock greater opportunities for local tourism while better connecting residents to the world,” federal infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government minister Catherine King said.
More than 500 construction jobs and more than 4400 permanent jobs are estimated to be created as part of the project.
It is expected to be completed in 2025.
“The economic uplift brought about by our new international airport will help future-proof the economy of the Hunter,” Newcastle Airport chief executive Peter Cock said.
“It will support industry, enable trade, help create jobs well beyond the visitor economy and will be a vibrant part of our region, helping in the Hunter transition.”
