Food producer Safcol Australia has committed $91 million to develop new manufacturing and sales facilities in the suburbs of Adelaide.

This month, the company broke ground on an $80-million food manufacturing plant at Edinburgh in Adelaide’s north and opened a new $11-million fish market in the inner-western suburb of Thebarton.

South Australian company Sagle Constructions is lead contractor for the Edinburgh project. Over the next two years, the plant will replace Safcol’s existing factory at Elizabeth.

Safcol chief executive Andrew Mitchell said the new plant would reduce energy costs and increase logistical efficiencies.

The company produces seafood, soups, canned vegetables and 60 per cent of Australia’s wet baby food.

The current Elizabeth plant houses Safcol’s national warehousing and import business.

“This investment is about building a manufacturing footprint that is fit for the future while continuing to support Australian producers, local supply chains and South Australian jobs,” Mitchell said.

The start of work on the plant coincides with the opening of Safcol’s new fish market at 36 West Thebarton Road.

The market has modern auction facilities, advanced digital systems, new refrigeration infrastructure and forklifts and improved parking.

“Fish sold through our market at 6am can be served on a plate in a South Australian home or restaurant that same evening,” Mitchell said.

“Some seafood is transported interstate and can be enjoyed in Sydney the following day.”
