Subject to a recent bout of gentrification, Sydney’s former light-industrial suburb of Camperdown is well on its way to becoming an exclusive inner-city residential hub, with its latest residential project
Recent residential improvements in the area has sparked interest from property buyers, investors and developers alike, due to the suburb’s close proximity to Sydney University and the Sydney CBD and its subsequent status as a unique and creative suburb ‘for the young at heart’.
This is also what inspired private developer Mark Mezrani and Marchese Partners to create the DNA Camperdown project, which is set to boast innovative architecture that mimics the suburb’s eccentric surroundings.
The development will house four buildings, ranging from four to seven storeys high; encircling two exquisitely landscaped ‘chill-out’ gardens.
Residents lucky enough to snap up an apartment on levels three and above will also experience views of the Sydney city skyline.
Eugene Marchese of Marchese Partners said Camperdown is popular with young professionals that look for an eclectic and cultural lifestyle.
“We are using a palette of raw materials which could best be described as ‘sophisticated grunge’, then giving the exteriors a visual ‘pop’ by adding vibrant panels of colour,” Mr. Marchese said.
“We have broken down the development’s scale by creating a series of intimate-size buildings where neighbours can get to know one another and generate a sense of community.
“Because affordability is the number one issue with Sydney property, apartment sizes have been reducing, but we think the layouts at DNA
are the most efficient we have ever designed,” he said.
The site’s developer Mark Mezrani is credited for bringing new life to Camperdown, who was drawn to the area when the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children was redeveloped, and has produced numerous projects with much success.
Murray Wood, a director of CBRE Residential Project Marketing, says land values in the area are rising as developers look for opportunities.
“Camperdown in particular offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle close to the CBD, parklands, sporting facilities and entertainment venues,” Mr Wood said.
“Sydney Uni is just across the road, making Camperdown a popular rental target for students, providing good returns for investors and the prospect of substantial capital growth” he said.
Due for completion in early 2014, DNA is selling off-the-plan with studio apartments from $425,000, one-bedrooms from $510,000 and two-bedroom apartments from $720,000.
A DNA
display village will also open in October this year.
