The veil over one of Sydney’s most anticipated developments is being lifted in Darlinghurst, giving the public their first glimpse of a new suburban landmark on the site of a former healthcare facility.
Dominion is a striking 108-apartment residential development being undertaken by construction superannuation giant, CBus Property.
The new three-building Dominion has become one of Sydney’s most visible structures as it is located on a ridge formerly known as Eastern Hill.
Nothing of the scale, architectural style or magnitude has been built in Darlinghurst since the multi-award winning Republic
more than a decade ago.
Dominion has been designed by Group GSA architects, and retains the existing sandstone streetscape, grand gates and palisade iron fencing.
Heritage elements have been restored and reused, including the internal courtyard and the refurbishing of Heritage House into 6 meticulously designed two-bedroom apartments.
“Dominion
is in a culturally significant heritage precinct so we are using traditional, precious materials – but in a progressive way,” said Mark Percy from Cbus Property, which has $2.5 billion worth of projects underway throughout Australia.
The 4,537 square metre site, bounded by Forbes, Burton and Bourke Street, was for 140 years a Caritas health facility.
Directly opposite the site is the infamous Darlinghurst Goal, built from Sydney’s finest sandstone between 1822 and 1914, which today is home to the National Art School.
Work started on Dominion
in early 2011 and is scheduled for completion by May 2013, with around $100 million worth of apartments already sold.
Colliers International says the location – on the fringe of the CBD, within walking distance of the Domain, Hyde Park, Royal Botanic Gardens, Woolloomooloo Bay and historic Macquarie Street – has been a major selling feature.
“We’re not surprised by the breadth of enquiry for Dominion
,” said David Chittenden of Colliers International.”
“Darlinghurst is a popular and cosmopolitan suburb attracting residents through its exciting and convenient lifestyle, cutting-edge fashion boutiques, restaurants, concept stores and sporting and recreational facilities.”
Dominion
also provides private open green space, with an internal courtyard containing a combination of mature trees, gardens, landscaped lawns, cobbled pathways, contemporary outdoor seating and a water features.
“The interiors are timeless, capturing the spirit and sophistication of grand buildings of yesteryear, and we have no doubt Dominion
will set a benchmark for residential accommodation in East Sydney,” Mr Percy said.
Remaining two- and three-bedroom apartments are priced from $1.2m - $1.79m.
