Australian Projects Shortlisted for the 2018 World Architecture Awards

The shortlist for the 2018 World Architecture Festival has been announced, with Australian projects featuring across 18 of the 20 completed buildings categories.

The shortlist has been whittled down from more than 1,000 submissions, with the selected projects invited to present their submissions at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam from 28 to 30 November.

Australian projects among this year's shortlist include John Wardle's Learning and Teaching Building at Monash, BVN's Australian Embassy Bangkok, OMA's 2017 MPavilion and Kerstin Thompson Architect's transformation of police stables into an art studio.

See below for a selection of shortlisted Australian projects.

Civic and Community


Projects that meet the criteria for the civic and community completed buildings category include ambulance and fire stations, cemeteries, consulates and embassies, government buildings, prisons and police stations and town halls.

The Australian projects shortlisted are: CHROFI with McGregor Coxall for Maitland Riverlink; Tanner Kibble Denton Architects for Warrumbungle National Park Visitor Centre and BVN's Australian Embassy in Bangkok.


Culture


Projects that meet the standards for the culture and completed buildings category include cinemas, concert halls, galleries, theatres, libraries and museums.

Two Australian projects are shortlisted for the Culture and Completed Buildings category: OMA's 2017 MPavilion and Conrad Gargett's The Piano Mill.



Health


Australian projects shortlisted for the health category include Architectus and HDR's Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Bendigo Hospital by Silver Thomas Hanley with Bates Smart.


Higher Education and Research


Australian projects shortlisted for the higher education and research facilities category are Architectus' Macquarie University Incubator and John Wardle Architect's Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University's Clayton campus.


Hotel and Leisure


Australian projects shortlisted for the hotel and leisure category include Freycinet Lodge by Liminal Architecture and Krakani Lumi by Taylor and Hinds Architects.


House


There are multiple house categories, with the first category incorporating conversions, and large, medium and small private houses.

Australian projects shortlisted are Cavill Architects for Gibbon Street, Austin Maynard Architects for King Bill, John Wardle Architect's Boneo Country House and Bureau Proberts' Bardon House.


Housing (Small Scale)


The second housing category focuses on small scale, mixed-housing complexes, and private and public housing buildings.

The Australian projects that made the 2018 shortlist: Woods Bagot's Elwood House (Melbourne) and Short Lane (Sydney) and DKO Architecture for Peel Street in Collingwood.


Housing (Large Scale)


Old and New


Projects that meet the criteria in the old and new completed buildings category include creative re-use and public space and urban design.

Kerstin Thompson Architects' Victorian College of the Arts was shortlisted. The building previously housed mounted police stables.


Office


Australian projects shortlisted for the office category include Tzannes' International House, Sydney and BVN's Synergy, CSIRO.


Religion


The Australian project which made the 2018 shortlist was the Emanuel Synagogue in Sydney by Lippmann Partnership.


School


Australian projects shortlisted for the school category include Hayball's south Melbourne primary school, BVN's Artemis Centre and Iredale Pedersen Hook architect's Highgate Primary School.

Shopping


Australian projects shortlisted are Urbis' Westfield Chermside's outdoor dining and leisure precinct in Brisbane and NH Architecture's Barossa Co-op.


Sport


The Australian Project which was shortlisted for the sport is Hassell Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia.


Transport


John Wardle Architects with NADAAA and Oculus were shortlisted in the transport category for their project Tanderrum Bridge in Melbourne.


Villa


Projects that can be entered into the villa completed buildings category include country houses, chateaus, and castles.

The Australian projects that have been shortlisted for 2018 are John Wardle Architects' Captain Kelly's Cottage, CHROFI for its Lune de Sang Pavilion, Allen Jack+Cottier's Kiama House and Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects' Glen Forrest House and Church.


Landscape Rural and Urban


The rural landscapes and urban landscapes category includes built projects in a rural or urban landscape context.

Australian shortlisted projects include Hassell's Optus Stadium and Stadium Park and Hassell's Darling Harbour Public Realm.
