Queensland Waves $750m Redland Health Hub Ahead

A $750-million health and education precinct has been approved for development in South-East Queensland, paving the way for one of the region’s largest private healthcare projects.

The Hub68 Centre of Excellence will be delivered on a 4ha site at Ormiston in Redland, about 28km east of the Brisbane CBD.

The centre will be about 3km from existing public and private hospitals.

The project has secured a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation, allowing it to bypass the council development assessment process and proceed through a state-led planning pathway.

The approval clears a major hurdle for the development, enabling detailed design and construction to move forward.

The masterplanned precinct will centre on a five-storey private hospital with up to 166 beds and 14 operating theatres.

It will also include a residential aged care facility of between 60 and 90 beds, alongside medical consulting suites and specialist health services.

Planned services span surgery, rehabilitation, cardiology and mental health, as well as day procedures such as dialysis and chemotherapy.

A childcare centre, community facilities and a dedicated research and education institute are also proposed as part of the integrated precinct.

The development is intended to function as a centre of excellence in ageing and wellness, integrating healthcare delivery with training and research.

Project proponents say the precinct is designed to address significant projected shortfalls in hospital beds, medical specialists and aged care places across Redland City by 2041.

The broader masterplan aims to co-locate general practice, allied health, specialist services, inpatient care and residential care within a single hub.

The site, formerly used as a printing facility, is being repurposed into a healthcare-focused precinct.

Early-stage medical services are already operating on the site, with the full development expected to be delivered in stages.

Construction of the hospital component alone is estimated to cost about $480 million, with the total project value reaching up to $750 million.

The precinct is expected to generate significant economic activity, including thousands of construction jobs and more than 800 ongoing roles once operational.

The development will include new road infrastructure, including a signalised intersection onto Finucane Road, a major arterial route.

Traffic impacts and environmental considerations, including vegetation preservation and effects on local wildlife, were raised during community consultation.

Despite these concerns, the state formally designated the land for healthcare, education and associated uses.

Developers say the project will provide an alternative to existing hospitals while improving access to private healthcare services
