Community housing providers have been selected for two new social housing projects at Subiaco and East Fremantle supported by Housing Australia Future Fund.
Tier one provider Community Housing Limited will deliver, own and operate the larger of the two projects at Court Place next to the Subiaco Oval with 447 apartments.
The project, just outside the Perth CBD, includes 300 affordable and 147 social homes along with 300sq m of commercial space on the ground floor.
It is part of the Subi East precinct, a major state government urban redevelopment project, to add 1000 homes around the oval along with parks, pedestrian links and civic spaces.
The largest provider in the state, Foundation Housing Limited, will work on the other project at East Street in East Fremantle with 34 apartments across a three-storey project.
The 3665sq m site was selected as part of the State Government’s Housing Diversity Pipeline, which identified lazy government land to bolster social and affordable housing.
Both projects are supported by HAFF in the first two rounds of funding while the community housing providers were selected following a competitive procurement process in 2024.
Construction on the project is expected to start in 2026 adding to a list of 14 DevelopmentWA-led, state-delivered projects as well as community housing provider delivered projects.
There are three provider-delivered projects, along with those at Subi Oval and East Freo is the pilot Brown Street, Busselton development with Housing Choices Australia for 30 apartments.
WA premier Roger Cook said every Western Australian deserved access to a safe and secure home.
“These two projects will not only provide greater housing diversity in prime metropolitan locations but will go a long way in boosting our state’s overall housing supply, improving long-term rental and housing affordability,” Cook said.
“It’s a great outcome for West Aussies who need a little bit more assistance to get a roof over their heads.”
Western Australia has secured more than $1.9 billion in federal funding through Housing Australia to deliver 2031 affordable and 1222 social homes.
The second round of Housing Australia Future Fund Facility funding was revealed this week for 5000 homes across the state, which included the East Street project.
Federal member for Fremantle Josh Wilson said this funding was addressing one of the most serious issues facing the country.
“These 481 new homes, 447 in Subiaco and 34 in East Fremantle, will provide well-placed, affordable and secure homes for individuals and families facing economic challenges, including essential workers, seniors, vulnerable women, children, and veterans,” Wilson said.
“The sensible and well-planned integration of community and social housing within all our communities is not merely a practical solution to an urgent need.”
