NextDC $1.1bn Data Centre Under Way in Sydney’s West

Dirt has been turned on a $1.2-billion data centre in Western Sydney that was first approved in NSW directly interconnect with the state’s transmission grid.

NextDC’s 350MW S4 Sydney data centre wil rise at 16 Johnston Crescent at Horsley Park.

The 30,743sq m facility will span two four-storey buildings and was designed by HDR and Greenbox Architects.

Construction is being delivered by Multiplex and is scheduled for completion in mid-2027.

NextDC said the facility was designed to support AI compute platforms, cloud services and data storage.

Declared a State Significant Development, the project will employ around 1800 workers onsite at peak construction.

The project continues a six-year collaboration between NextDC and Multiplex, which has delivered data centres in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.

Multiplex said early engagement allowed fast-tracked construction while maintaining safety, quality and future-proofed design standards.

The development includes a high-voltage switch room and a 330kV electrical substation.

Extensive modular construction methods are being used, including prefabricated mechanical plantrooms, lift cores, columns, OSD tanks and façade elements.

Sustainability features include passive design, rooftop solar, smart LED lighting, low-GWP refrigerants, low-carbon materials, and EV charging infrastructure.

Water efficiency measures incorporate rainwater harvesting for irrigation, toilets, and cooling towers, while landscaping features native planting and raingardens.

The Horsley Park site was formerly a clay and shale quarry and convict-era brickworks.

Multiplex was first engaged on the project in April 2022, entering a formal early contractor involvement phase in mid-2024 to refine design and support the State Significant Development process.

The contractor has previously delivered S2 Sydney, S3 Sydney Stages 1 and 2, and S6 Sydney data centres, and is completing expansions at B2 Brisbane and P1 Perth.

This project is one of NextDC’s largest Australian facilities and Multiplex’s fourth data centre delivery in New South Wales.
