The NSW government’s new Sydney Fish Market project, forming part of the revitalisation of Blackwattle Bay, has reached an exciting milestone with a range of tenancies now available for lease.
With $750 million invested by the NSW government, this iconic waterfront destination, the largest working fish market in the southern hemisphere, will offer a world-class visitor experience like no other.
Designed by renowned architects 3XN, the new Sydney Fish Market will be a purpose-built facility that showcases Australia’s vibrant seafood industry and culinary culture of Sydney. The architectural masterpiece features a distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof, paying homage to the fishing industry while standing as a symbol of modernity and innovation.
Spanning 30,000sqm, the new Sydney Fish Market will introduce 12,000sqm of new retail space. With the increased footprint, the Market expects to double its current annual visitation, welcoming approximately 6 million people from around the world to experience the epicentre of Australian seafood and fresh produce.
Sydney Fish Market already offered much more than seafood, chief executive of the Sydney Fish Market Greg Dyer said.
“We are a one-stop-shop for Sydney food-lovers, with a fantastic butcher, bakery, green-grocer, artisanal deli, and bottleshop onsite, as well as our world-class wet seafood retailers,” Dyer said.
“Our new state-of-the-art facilities present an opportunity to expand the Market’s offerings even further and deliver a truly one-of-a-kind visitor experience.”
Retail Strategy Group has been appointed to develop the retail strategy, curate and lease the new Sydney Fish Market precinct.
There will be 19 new opportunities for lease ranging from smaller tenancies, ideal for merchants and grab-and-go options, to larger tenancies suitable for restaurants or a brewery. Tenancies are open to all food and beverage businesses.
Retail Strategy Group director Angela Bonnefin said this was an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of Sydney’s next iconic destination as one of the foundational retail partners.
“Against the backdrop of Blackwattle Bay, Sydney Fish Market’s restaurants, bars and hospitality offerings will trade seven days a week. From an early morning coffee and pastry, through to an ice-cream after fish and chips, the Market will be a place for everyone,” Bonnefin said.
“Our approach to the leasing and curation of the new market is simple. We want the finest operators in each category to join us on a journey to create a world-class fresh food marketplace. Everyone is eligible to apply through the expression of interest phase and we can’t wait to work with the best-in-class retailers to bring this iconic project to life.
Partner at 3XN Fred Holt said the unique design of Sydney Fish Market meant that no matter where you were within the Market, there was always a connection back to place.
“It is not a generic construct that can be built anywhere; instead, it is designed to accentuate its location and allow the promenade to move through the building, providing captivating vistas of both the waterfront [pictured, top] and the park.
“The revitalised Market acts as a social catalyst for community activity and will establish itself as an exciting new destination for Sydney. Additionally, it rekindles a sense of nostalgia among Sydneysiders, as it brings them back to the beloved and iconic fish market,” Holt said.
Strategically located less than 2km from the heart of the city, the iconic new Sydney Fish Market will attract a diverse and distinct group of customers, promising to be a thriving hub that serves the needs of the community while attracting visitors from near and far.
