It was the kind of place where locals rushed through their grocery shop, dodging dim corners while glancing over a shoulder before making a swift exit. 

The nickname wasn’t just dark humour—it reflected how people felt. The old centre on Cleveland Street, where Surry Hills meets Redfern, made visitors uneasy.
