The once-cloistered confines of Adelaide’s Freemasons Hall will be renovated and opened to the public as part of a $400-million hotel and residential project in Adelaide’s CBD.

Under plans filed by Freemasons SA & NT, parts of the building will be opened to a new Westin hotel, hospitality venues, high-end residential apartments and cultural uses.

The proposed works on the hall are part of the $400 million, 41-storey Keystone Tower development.

The project seeks to retain the sandstone building’s hall of fame, marble staircase, original parquetry floors and ceremonial lodge rooms.

Under the proposal, the hall of fame would be adapted as the hotel’s main check-in lobby.

Freemasons SA & NT grand master William Merrill said the proposal would ensure the lodge “remains an active and meaningful part of the city”.

“The doors will open to all Adelaideans and welcome interstate and international visitors to one of the city’s oldest buildings,” he said.

“This is a sensitive adaptation of a historic place, not a replacement of it.”

The Keystone project includes 201 hotel rooms, 25 apartment hotel rooms and 48 apartments for sale.

The project’s lead consultant Michael Baragwanath said the development had been guided by tours of heritage buildings in London.

The Keystone Tower is in the early stages of construction.
