State Moves Ahead on Vision for East Werribee

The Victorian Planning Authority's render for the East Werribee Precinct,

The first step towards developing the East Werribee Precinct has been taken with the release of an opportunity statement.

The East Werribee Opportunity Statement, released by the State Government this week, that outlines what the state sees as possible the future of the area.

Measure outlined in the statement includes building on the area’s existing strong industries, such as agriculture, manufacturing, energy and tourism.

It also suggest supporting development that underpins that as well as providing accommodation, facilities and services for the region’s growing population and workforce.

Development would also include key infrastructure such as the expansion of the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department.

Government land at East Werribee would be unlocked to meet those future development needs.

Timing is also crucial for the plan—the opening of the Metro Tunnel in 2025 will increase capacity on the Werribee and Williamstown lines during peak hours, increasing the accessibility and livability of Werribee and East Werribee.

As well, the West Gate Tunnel will cut travel times between the area and the Port of Melbourne, further contributing to growth in the area.

Other infrastructure planned for East Werribee include the Bay West Port, the Intermodal Freight Terminal and the Suburban Rail Loop.

The Victorian Government also plans to establish a Stakeholder Reference Group for the precinct.

Developers are already taking up opportunities in the region—in March The Urban Developer reported the approval of a residential project that incorporates the Werribee Water Tower.

There have been suggestions Wyndham and Werribee be developed as a second or satellite city to Melbourne.
