Ground has been broken on a $50-million industrial development bigger than three rugby league fields at Brisbane Airport.
The state-of-the-art Australia Post parcel facility will span a gross floor area of 33,800sq m and feature direct airside access from the 100ha Airport Industrial Park.
Brisbane Airport chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff said it would be the airport’s largest industrial project to date and was part of a $5-billion expansion program that included upgrades of its existing domestic and international terminals as well as planning for a third terminal.
“By providing Australia Post with direct airside access, we’re streamlining the delivery of time-sensitive parcels, benefitting millions of Queenslanders in the south-east and regional areas of the state,” he said.
Australia Post’s new StarTrack parcel facility will consolidate its two Brisbane sites within the airport’s industrial zone.
On completion, the postal service’s second largest parcel facility in Queensland—equipped with leading automation and security technology—will process up to 176,000 parcels a day.
It will accommodate about 200 shift workers at any given time.
Initial earth works have commenced and during the construction phase about 1500 jobs will be generated. The facility is due to be operational in mid-2025.
It will comprise a 31,800sq m warehouse as well as 2000sq m of office space across two levels. On-site parking for 350 cars also will be provided.
The development is targeting a 5-Star Green Star certification for energy and water efficiency, climate change resilience and reduced environmental impacts during construction.
As part of its sustainability features, more than 1000 solar panels will be installed on the building for renewable energy generation, complementing Brisbane Airport’s goal of net zero emissions in 2025.
Other existing and future tenants in the precinct include Martin Brower, Aramex Australia, Superior Food Services and Air Menzies.
