A 30-storey tower claimed to draw design inspiration from a stack of surfboards will rise on the Gold Coast skyline after developer Bastion Group secured approval for the $200-million project.

The development—dubbed Surfer—will deliver 25 residential apartments and 75 short-term accommodation units, all with two bedrooms, above ground-floor retail space and a signature restaurant.

It is slated for an amalgamated 1231sq m site at 25-27 Vista Street, Surfers Paradise.

Designed by Studio Snell, the architectural concept incorporates creative input from Australian surfers Dane Henry and Milla Coco Brown to create “a tower born from surf culture and coastal life”.

Planned recreational facilities on level four will include a gym, barbecue area, swimming pool, sauna and spa, plunge pool and a private residents’ lounge—below which podium parking will be provided for 45 vehicles.

Bastion Group chief executive Alex Wood said the approval provides certainty in a central coastal precinct where key development sites remain scarce.

“Surfers Paradise remains one of Australia’s most recognisable lifestyle destinations, and we’re seeing sustained demand for well-designed apartments in central locations with strong amenity and connectivity,” Wood said.

“This project responds directly to that demand, delivering a considered, design-led product in a location where new supply remains limited.”

It is targeting a broad buyer profile, including owner-occupiers, investors and younger buyers seeking proximity to lifestyle and transport infrastructure.

Construction on Surfer is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2027. Works will be carried out by in-house builder Bastion Built, with asset management handled post-completion by Bastion Living.

“Having an in-house construction arm allows us to maintain quality control, respond efficiently during delivery, and ensure consistency across our projects,” Wood said.

The approval advances Bastion's broader $500-million development pipeline across the Gold Coast—including the $184-million Nera tower under construction at Chevron Island.
