Adelaide’s First Church to be Restored as 31-Storey PBSA Tower Rises
The City of Churches’ first church will be restored as part of a now under way 31-storey student housing project beside one of Adelaide University’s CBD campuses.
Being developed by 1835 Property and Marlborough Capital, the $450-million project at 88 North Terrace in the South Australian capital is being built by Synergy Construct and will be operated by UniLodge.
The tower behind Adelaide’s oldest kirk (the 1838-built Trinity Church) will house 979 beds and is slated to open in mid-2028.
To rise beside Adelaide University’s City West campus, the student accommodation tower is also close to Flinders University’s growing City Campus.
Managing director of 1835 Property Jason Di Iulio said the development team would carefully restore the church.
He said construction was running ahead of schedule, with the jump form now rising over the state heritage-listed limestone holy building.
“Adelaide’s university sector is entering a powerful new phase,” he said.
“With Adelaide University climbing the global rankings, Flinders University expanding its city campus and strong ongoing demand from international students, the need for high-quality, purpose-built accommodation right next to the campuses has never been clearer.”
All bedrooms in the development will have an ensuite bathroom.
The project includes a 24-7 gym, yoga studio, music and media room, study areas, lounges, a café and communal kitchens. An outdoor deck overlooking the church will have a barbecue area, pickleball court and moonlight cinema.
A new public piazza will connect the tower to busy North Terrace.
Senior Pastor Paul Harrington said the project was “a wonderful opportunity to enhance our ministry to the people of the City of Adelaide” and would “place us at the heart of a vibrant university precinct”.
