Leading Auckland breast surgeon John Harman is shaping a new landmark integrated residential community in one of the city’s most affluent and sought-after suburbs.
His mixed-use St Marks development is positioned in a premium, leafy suburban location on St Marks Road at Remuera, just southeast of the Auckland city centre, and will comprise three separate apartment buildings organised around a central courtyard.
The residential buildings, named The Mac, The Mark and The Grove, will house a total of 48 luxury apartments as well as ground-floor café, restaurant and deli offerings.
A fourth stand-alone building, The Blade, will shield the residences from the road and house commercial offices and professional suites, including Mr Harman’s new state-of-the-art breast clinic.
Having operated from St Marks Road for more than 28 years, Mr Harman said the centrality of the location that has served his business well was also ideally suited to delivering a stylish new standard in luxury apartment living to suburban Auckland.
He is also a passionate convert to the apartment lifestyle, having moved his family from a large traditional villa a decade ago. He described it as a revelation “to live in a home that appreciates and welcomes light” and believed the connection and conviviality of single-level apartment living brought his family together like never before.
Mr Harman’s personal experience with apartment living and an intimate understanding of the St Marks area and its local charm and character, led him to undertake the St Marks development. Buyers have responded positively with the more than half the project’s apartments sold, site works now underway, and completion scheduled by the end of 2017.
St Marks is being developed by Mr Harman’s St Marks Development Ltd and built by Dominion Constructors. The project architect is Peddle Thorp, with interior designs by Amelia Holmes and landscaping by Natural Habitats.
The sheltered central courtyard is a key design feature of the development and will feature towering green walls. The apartments will be built predominantly in concrete, steel and glass with the natural feel further highlighted by oak and stone floorings.

St Mark’s 48 apartments come in a variety of one-to four bedroom configurations, with The Mac building housing 16 apartments, The Mark nine and The Grove 23. There are also two ultra-premium penthouses crowning the The Mac and The Mark buildings. The generously proportioned residents are unlike anything previously offered in the Auckland apartment market and include flexible outdoor rooms with large glass sliding doors.
In line with Mr Harman’s own love of the light-filled, lock-up-and-leave apartment lifestyle, the focus is on letting the sun and warmth in, and closing off to the elements when needed.
He said a key focus of the St Marks development has been the creation of premium apartment residences that he and his family and friends would like to live in.
St Marks is set to redefine sophisticated high-end apartment living in suburban Auckland, built on unrivalled levels of accessibility and liveability.
The project is surrounded by schools and shops and just a short walk to the local rackets club providing swimming pool, tennis court, squash, gym and Pilates facilities.
