Plan to Add 13 Storeys to Sydney Church

The Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament has lodged plans for a $40-million redevelopment of its Haymarket church, complete with nine levels of A-grade commercial floor space.

Rising above the St Peter Julian’s Church at 641 George Street, the ambitious commercial extension over the 1200sq m site is being overseen directly by the church.

Along with 7000sq m of office space, the 13-storey tower will include the redevelopment of the church’s chapel, monastery and quarters as well as ancillary spaces.

The 2600sq m church, in the heart of Sydney’s Chinatown, was designed by architect Terrence Daly, who undertook a large body of work for the Catholic Church in NSW.

The church was built in 1964 and underwent extensive internal refurbishments in 2008.

Local architecture firm Candalepas Associates is responsible for the design of the project, which will tower over the former Haymarket post office next door.

The building will have three main sections—church facilities, lobby and office space—with each reflected in the building design and within its heritage facades.

Candalepas, which has previously worked on religious institutions including St Mary’s Cathedral in the city and the Punchbowl Mosque, plans to redevelop and expand the heritage-listed church to comprise 1800sq m of congregation space.

The redevelopment will include upgrades to the sacristy, interview parlours, meeting rooms, six domiciles with a refectory, a recreation room, a private chapel and a roof garden.

Last month, Australia’s Greek Orthodox Church lodged plans for a $27.5-million redevelopment at its archdiocese in Redfern.

The restoration of the 173-year-old cathedral, located at 242 Cleveland Street, has also been designed by Candalepas.

Candelapas is also overseeing the $250-million extension of the QT hotel at 458-472 George Street in the CBD as well as designing a new 13-storey office tower at an undeveloped site bounded by George, Wynyard and York streets, and Barrack Lane.

Plans are pushing ahead for a Candalepas-designed 36-storey hotel development that will cantilever over the heritage-listed Porter House building at 116 Bathurst Street.

In Surry Hills, the architect has drawn up plans for a $65-million development that will convert an existing 1970s six-storey brick office and retail building into a refurbished office space.
