Inside 11 of the World’s Most Inspirational Libraries

At their core, libraries inform, entertain and inspire. And around the world, creating the buildings themselves has been the source of the latter for architects. From a centre that draws inspiration from the prairie it calls home to a library that rose from the remains on an earthquake-ravaged city, here are 11 of the world’s most inspirational libraries. Guyanese University Library French Guiana Rh+ Architecture Completed: 2013 The building at the heart of the Guyanese University Campus in the national capital, Cayenne, had to be “a driving force within the university and contribute to its regional radiance”, according to the Portugal-based architects. “Its vocation is to gather books and readers in a unique place dedicated to knowledge, an open and generous place within the university,” the practice said. “It is about providing a cultural and documentary service of quality and also materialise the image of the regional community, [to give] a physical, social and symbolic identity that will impact the neighbourhood and the city.” Odong Public Library South Korea Unsangdong Architects Completed: 2023 Situated in Odong Park in Seoul’s Seongbuk District, the library came about “to provide a forest library as a public refuge where we may converse with books because the residents needed fresh architectural proposals”, the South Korean architects said. “Despite being a small library [431sq m], people from different social classes who visit feel both purposeful and nomadic in the flowing space,” they said. “A little room transcends its smallness of scale and becomes a space of multilateral value through an integrated and circular space.” Stuttgart City Library Germany Yi Architects Completed: 2011 The site for the library was chosen for Mailänder Platz, an area perceived as a future city centre growing from the library. With this in mind, the architects said, they chose to physically express the importance of this cultural centre by giving the building a grand physical presence. The building is a cube with 45m edge lengths constructed of pale grey fair-faced concrete that visually frames an array of frosted glass bricks. Protected by a secondary facade, the cube-shaped room is situated in the middle of the building and is illuminated by a central roof light, while the gallery hall is a five-storey space surrounded by a shell of books. The interior circulation is arranged in a spiral among the reading gallery areas, designed to be flowing promenades flooded with light from the glass roof. Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library Australia Buchan Completed: 2024 The $21.8-million facility in the heart of Geelong’s Armstrong Creek Town Centre covers 2500sq m across three storeys and contains more than 30,000 books and resources. The library’s facade is punctuated by circular windows that Buchan architect Aleksander Borek said represented many individuals coming together and were inspired by the “living water” design narrative developed with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the City of Greater Geelong. Along Main Street, a waveform canopy with a rippling ceiling protects pedestrians and shades large windows that flood the ground floor with natural light. The main entry is from the new town square, where a cantilevered roof shelters a landscaped forecourt that flows into the library’s interior. Calgary Central Library Canada Snøhetta Completed: 2018 A light rail transit line crosses the site from above to below ground on a curved half-moon path, dividing the Downtown and East Village areas of the city in Alberta. In response, the architects said, the design lifted the main entry over the encapsulated train line while “gently terraced slopes rise up to the heart of the building, allowing people arriving from every direction to interact with the library”. “The dynamic, triple-glazed facade is composed of a modular, hexagonal pattern that expresses the library’s aims to provide a space that invites in all visitors.” The entrance was created from planks of western red cedar from nearby British Columbia, and the double-curved shell was among one of the largest freeform timber shells in the world, Snøhetta said. Organised on a spectrum of Fun to Serious, the library locates livelier public activities on the lower floors, gradually transitioning to quieter study areas on the upper levels. Tianjin Binhai Library China MRDV, Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute Completed: 2017 International firm MVRDV in collaboration with city architects TUPDI designed the 33,700sq m cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium around which floor-to-ceiling bookcases cascade. The undulating bookshelf is the building’s main spatial device and is used to frame the space and to create stairs, seating, the layered ceiling and louvres on the facade. Tianjin Binhai Library was designed and built in just three years due to a tight schedule imposed by the local municipality. The library is in the cultural centre of the Binhai district in Tianjin, a coastal metropolis outside Beijing and is one of a cluster of five cultural buildings designed by an international cadre of architects. All buildings are connected by a public corridor underneath a glass canopy. Patience S Latting Northwest Library United States LWPB Architecture Completed: 2012 The library in Oklahoma City in the Mid-West draws much of its inspiration from the trussed towers of the windmill and oil derrick structure of the region. “Rolling prairie fields have been captured in the form of the large earthen knolls that surround and anchor the building in the landscape,” the architect said. “Since the project incorporates massive earth berms for the exterior facade makeup, the project team ... spent considerable time dealing with mass amounts of earth movement and stabilisation.” The large derrick structures located at skylight penetrations, eight in all, are built of steel angle iron and clad in glass to bring in natural light and form individual conference/meeting rooms. Given the region’s extreme weather events, a storm safe room/refuge area was incorporated into the design. Mariano Moreno National Library Argentina Clorindo Testa, Francisco Bullrich and Alicia Cazzaniga Completed 1992 Located on a raised area of land in the elegant Recoleta neighbourhood, the Mariano Moreno National Library is based on a modernist architectural project from the architects Clorindo Testa, Francisco Bullrich and Alicia Cazzaniga, who won a national contest to design the building in 1961, though it was not inaugurated in 1992. The library houses close to a million manuscripts, books, documents, photos, maps, scores and recordings and has the biggest newspaper archive in Latin America—and a page from the Gutenberg Bible. There are nine reading rooms with capacity for 940 readers. Constitución Public Library Chile Sebastián Irarrazaval Completed: 2015 The library is part of a public-private initiative taken to rebuild the city of Constitución after an earthquake and tsunami devastated the town during in 2010. It is a small settlement in the heart of one of the biggest clusters of wood production in Chile, which, the architects said, “gives identity to the town and creates the best conditions to find not only high-quality wood but also gifted carpenters to carefully craft a wooden building”. The building is made almost entirely of wood—only the firewalls are exposed poured concrete. The structure was prefabricated and is made of laminated pine. “In order to rhythm the interior space and to make the loads and the construction process understandable, the wood beams and pillars were kept as visible as possible,” according to Irarrazaval. Vennesla Library and Culture House Norway Helen &amp; Hard Completed: 2011 For the library and community centre at Vennesla, 335km south of the Norwegian capital Oslo, Norwegian architects Helen &amp; Hard needed to link an existing community house and learning centre to the new structure, The architects said it sought to be an extension of the main city square with its transparent facade and urban loggia. Twenty-seven prefabricated glue-laminated timber ribs define the spatial expression of the interior, with their offset construction allowing the curves to function as spatial interfaces with inset and acoustic absorbents that contain the air-conditioning ducts. “The expressive ribs combine structure, technical infrastructure, and functionality into one architectonic element that creates a dynamic aesthetic identity for the project to meet the client’s original intent to mark the city’s cultural centre,” the architects said. Kenya National Library Kenya Aaki Consultants Architects Completed: 2017 Less than 10km from the capital Nairobi’s CBD, the design by the Kenyan-based practice draws inspiration from traditional drums. Kenya has 42 distinctly identified cultures. Given this, the political idea at the heart of this architecture is to unify Kenya’s diverse population in their search for knowledge. An African drum, the architects said, “sends forth a familiar rhythm”. The library sits atop three drums; a symbolism of the fireplace where stories were told in the past. The use of drums was a deliberate attempt to blend cultures that share their love for storytelling. The library has a capacity of 5000 people and includes a theatre, auditorium and private cubicles for research. There is also a play area for children and a secluded space for the elderly.
