Australian design firm Hecker Guthrie is expected to attract strong attention to the popular Melbourne precinct, West End, with the reveal of The Spencer, which aims to set a soaring new standard for what modern apartments should incorporate.
Situated on West End’s eastern face, cornering Dudley Street and Bluestone Lane, The Spencer will span 11 stories and encompass 102 apartments in an area where a hotel, wellness facility, restaurants and much more will be co-located.
While The Spencer contains West End’s most affordable apartments, the generosity afforded to the interiors is of inverse proportion to the pricing structure.
Hecker Guthrie has aimed to include appliances that are thoughtful towards to consumer, modern appliances in each apartment such as dish drawer dishwashers and integrated fridges, meaning residents do not need to compromise on life’s luxuries, and can make full use of these great value added extras.
“In creating The Spencer, we’ve provided an abundance of carefully selected components that ensure the highest standard of living,” Hecker Guthrie Founding Director Paul Hecker said.
“Instead of designing The Spencer to include only the simple necessities required in a home, we’ve created these apartments with what residents want at the forefront of our thinking.
“Inclusions and design details not usually seen in apartments are standard features at The Spencer. Joinery acts as built-in furniture as well as being functional storage, a dining table is nestled underneath the island benches and kitchens include abundant appliances,” Hecker said.
West End will feature four apartment buildings, plus a five star Adina Grand Hotel, extensive amenity, retail including a supermarket and medical centre, plus a new public park, transforming an entire block in West Melbourne.
Four of Australia’s most awarded interior design firms have come together to transform the formerly industrial site into an urban sanctuary that marries design, sustainability, technology and amenity to create a precinct that residents never need to leave.
The Spencer’s architecture, rendered in exposed brick, is calm and subtle. This informs the interiors, which are similarly designed to be timeless in design.
An immediate sense of respite is created upon entry, with a neutral palette and lightness pervading. Scandinavian influences are apparent through the use natural textures and interesting forms.
Rhythm is found in the geomatics of the interiors as cylinders and cubes combine to create balance and interest through lighting fixtures, joinery and mirrors.
Carefully proportioned joinery abounds in each room, ensuring ample storage and negating the need for excess furniture. Sliding doors and concealed shelving enable apartments to maintain an uncluttered, calm feel.
Hecker Guthrie’s signature feature rails are found in the bathrooms and living spaces, acting as a unique design feature whilst maintaining practical functionality.
The granite finishes of the island bench and splashback are mirrored by the same materiality used for the bathroom vanities, providing continuity and alignment throughout the apartments.
Brushed nickel-like finishes have a soft and refined aesthetic, underpinning Hecker Guthrie’s desire to create an ageless design, rather than a fashionable but ephemeral statement.
“In creating The Spencer, our signature soft modernism design has been refined to offer life within the space of each apartment,” Hecker said.
“These are residences we’d love to live in and that’s a true sign of design with integrity and heart.”
One of West End’s four residential buildings, The Spencer is part of a future-ready mixed-use development in West Melbourne. West End will transform a 9200 square metre former industrial site into a vibrant, connected hub for living, playing, staying and working.

As well as Hecker Guthrie, Carr Design Group, Mim Design and Six Degrees are all imparting their signature aesthetic on one West End residential building interior each.
